SDGs Ambassador Programme

Developing the next generation of SDG leaders through universities.

Programme overview

The SDGs Ambassador Programme is a no-fee university pathway for structured youth engagement, practical SDG leadership and participation in Project GENERA. It enables participating universities to appoint and support student Ambassadors who can translate sustainable-development knowledge into campus engagement, community partnership and real-world implementation.

The Programme is designed around responsibility and applied experience. Ambassadors are not positioned as informal volunteers; they are supported as student leaders who can develop project ideas, coordinate stakeholders, contribute to implementation, document outcomes and help connect their institutions with locally relevant SDG action.

Strategic context

Universities play a central role in developing the knowledge, skills and leadership required for sustainable development. The SDGs Ambassador Programme strengthens the link between academic learning and practical implementation by providing a structured pathway through which students can assume defined responsibilities, work with institutional and community partners, and contribute to measurable outcomes.

Institutional and student value

For universities, the Programme provides a low-barrier entry point for structured SDG engagement, experiential learning, community partnership and applied research. For students, it builds practical experience in leadership, project management, stakeholder coordination, evidence collection and communication — capabilities with relevance beyond the classroom.

Integration with Project GENERA

The Ambassador pathway creates a repeatable local mechanism for Project GENERA. Participating universities may use successive Ambassador cohorts to host, adapt or support approved Project GENERA activities locally, subject to UNION review, programme requirements and appropriate institutional oversight. This route complements Project GENERA’s original proposal or competition pathway and expands opportunities for sustained local implementation.

Programme status and engagement

“SDGs Ambassador” is a programme designation within UNION. It does not constitute appointment as a United Nations official, employee or representative. Universities interested in establishing an Ambassador cohort may contact UNION to discuss participation, faculty coordination and an appropriate launch window.
